Special Events are a major part of our summer fun. Aside from great performers who come to entertain us, we have lots of music going on. There are major nighttime and Poolside Concerts that rock. And each summer we go to see our local baseball heroes--the New Britain Rock Cats--where we just about take over the Stadium! It’s one of the highlights of the summer for our campers.
Mostly though, we make our own great times in-house with so many Special Days & Nights at Wah-Nee. We feature 3 "Mini-Camp" days where you choose your very favorite activity (sports, arts, water, you name it...) and do it ALL DAY! It's another way you get more of everything you love best! We also have spirited Lip Synch competitions, Skit nights, Campfires, Luaus...the list goes on, making every day at camp special!

Then there's Color War at Wah-Nee--done like no one else can do it! It's days of fun and mayhem, where we throw everything we've done all summer long into the pot & mix it up! Don't even try to guess when or how Color War will break this year--that's TOP SECRET--but it's sure to be spectacular (and as beautiful as that hot air balloon you see on this page!) It's truly an amazing event, one more reason why Wah-Nee is Like No Other Camp in the World. Sure, other camps have Color War...It's just better here!
We love our visits from Pro Athletes every summer, representing many different sports. Last summer's featured guest was future NBA star and current NCAA Men's Basketball Champion Kemba Walker of the UConn Huskies! Kemba was voted MVP of the entire Tournament, lead his team to victory, and had what everyone considers to be one of the greatest runs in NCAA history. He shared his incredible story with us all--and the kids were transfixed as they had just finished watching him dominate TV basketball last Spring. The buzz throughout camp when it was announced that he would be visiting Wah-Nee was electrifying, and his visit did not disappoint! In 2010 we hosted the NBA’s Jay Williams, a remarkable guy with skills that stunned and dazzled everyone. He ran drills & clinics and told us his story from the start, including awesome tales of his time with Coach K at Duke. Also in 2010, we welcomed Wilson Chandler, formerly of the New York Knicks, a young, emerging NBA superstar who was gracious and patient with all our kids—signing all autograph requests & taking pictures with everyone. It's a real treat to have such bright and engaging young star athletes join us at camp! Past summers have featured super people like David Lee, formerly of the Knicks (the last 2 summers before), NFL star Barry Cofield of the NY Giants, 7 foot tall Nenad Krstic, then of the NJ Nets (see below!) and Mark Jackson from the Knicks who now broadcasts NBA games! (After seeing Wah-Nee in action, Mark actually left his son with us! Wow!) And for the last several years, we have welcomed 7 footer and NBA Legend Darryl Dawkins to camp! Darryl is funny, engaging, loves kids & spends DAYS with us--not hours! The kids love goofing with Darryl every summer--and he plans to keep on coming back! All our athletes are chosen because they're great role models who share uplifting stories that our kids take positive messages from. A gift from Camp to our great kids...and part of how we learn about life in so many important ways here!
We were also thrilled to welcome Jennie Finch, a remarkable woman considered the greatest women's softball player in U.S. history. Jennie signed autographs for everyone and put on a simply awesome pitching demonstration! She throws the equivalent of a 100 mph fastball, and seeing it live and up close was a genuine treat! To top it all off, she helped us to break Color War! What a spectacular day at camp! Past years have brought many greats from the NBA, NFL and other pro sports, a long time tradition at Wah-Nee going back to Earl Monroe, Truck Robinson, Dave Cowens, Nate Archibald, Darryl Dawkins, Brian Scalabrine and so many more...can you guess who will show up next summer?!! |
